Description: The recent Rudd apology to the Stolen Generations has been viewed by many Australians as significant step in the reconciliation process. To what extent does the apology mark the beginning of a new relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians? And where do we need to go from here? This dialogue will give you an opportunity to listen to, and engage with, leading indigenous thinkers on these issues.

6. Employment Opportunity: Human Rights Lawyer
The Human Rights Law Resource Centre is a specialist community legal service that undertakes and supports litigation, advocacy, law reform and education to promote human rights in Australia.Thanks to the generous support of the Victorian Legal Services Board, the Centre is seeking a full-time Human Rights Lawyer based in Melbourne.
The Lawyer will undertake and support casework, strategic litigation, advocacy, law reform and policy development, legal education and human rights capacity building in each of these areas. The Lawyer will also work with the Centre’s other staff in areas including administration, business development, fund raising, project management, media, publications and marketing.
The Lawyer will:
- have a very strong commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights;
- be admitted to practice (or eligible for admission) as a lawyer in Victoria;
- have at least 2-4 years post-admission experience as a lawyer;
- be able to develop strong partnerships with the Centre’s key stakeholders, including the community legal sector, the commercial legal sector, government and human rights NGOs and preferably have worked in at least one of these sectors;
- be able to work very effectively in a small, flexible, responsive, dynamic and motivated team;
- be able to work with a high degree of autonomy and limited supervision;
- have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills;
- have excellent legal research, analysis and writing skills; and
- be innovative, creative and collaborative.
The Centre seeks exceptional candidates andoffers salaries that are highly competitive in the community legal sector. The salary will be in the range of $60-68,000 (+ salary packaging), depending on qualifications, experience and other relevant considerations.
