6 June 2008 Workshop: Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities came into force on May 3 2008. The Human Rights Forum, in conjunction with the Human Rights Law Resource Centre hosted workshop examining the development of the Convention and the ramifications of its entry into force. Presenters included Dr Martin Leckey, Associate Professor Lee Ann Basser (LaTrobe) and Phillip French. 4 April 2008 Advocating for Human Rights at Local and International Levels: A Strategic Workshop for NGOsThe Human Rights Forum and the Human Rights Law Resource Centre presented a workshop given by Gay McDougall, UN Independent Expert on Minority Rights and Hina Jilani, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Human Rights Defenders.
3 April 2008 Lawyers as Defenders of Human Rights: A Dialogue with Hina JilaniThe Human Rights Forum and the Law Institute of Victoria Administrative Law & Human Rights Section presented a dialogue between Ms Hina Jilani, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Human Rights Defenders, and Brian Walters SC, former President of Liberty Victoria.
16 November 2007: Workshop - Seen and Heard: Priority for Children in the Legal Process WorkshopThe Human Rights Forum, together with the Melbourne Law School, the Institute for International Law & the Humanities, the National Children’s and Youth Law Centre, and Youth Law (Victoria) held a workshop to mark the 10th Anniversary of Seen and Heard: Priority for Children in the Legal Process, the landmark report prepared by the Australian Law Reform Commission and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The workshop was by invitation only.
15 November 2007: Human Rights Forum Annual Network Meeting and End-of-Year DrinksThe annual network meeting offered a chance to hear a report back on the work of the Forum over the past year, as well as details of events planned for 2008. There was a call for nominations for the Steering Committee, and for Working Group proposals. The meeting was followed by end-of-year celebratory drinks.Time: 5.30pm - meeting, 6.00pm - drinks
2 October 2007: Postgraduate Human Rights Roundtable with Professor Mick DodsonThe Human Rights Forum presented this unique workshop with Professor Mick Dodson, Director of the National Centre for Indigenous Studies. Postgraduate students from across the University will gave brief presentations on their research in the area of Human Rights and Indigenous People, with Professor Dodson offering some thoughts and comments on each paper.Topics: Students presented on topics including genocide, land rights, indigenous health, the Northern Territory (Emergency Response) Intervention and colonial adminstrations.A write-up of the event and photos can be found here:Postgraduate Roundtable with Professor Mick Dodson
23 August 2007: Human Rights and Climate Change WorkshopThe Human Rights Forum hosted an exploratory workshop on issues relating to climate change and human rights. Speakers from the Law Institute, the University of Melbourne Office for Environmental Programs,and from the Schools of Social and Environmental Enquiry, Political Science, Criminology and Sociology, and Law presented on topics relating to the general theme. 29 June 2007: Interdisciplinary Symposium: Legitimising lesbian and gay parented familiesJustice Sally Brown from the Family Court of Australia opened this symposium, with keynote addresses delivered by Dr Deborah Dempsey, Associate Professor Kristen Walker and John Tobin. Description: The first 2007 event of COAT Victorian Chapter Inc included guest speakers and panel members who discussed the potential impact of the Victorian Human Rights Charter on both the work of the Victorian and Commonwealth tribunals and Victorian citizens generally.
Speakers: Matthew Carroll (Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission), Susanne Liden (VCAT), Robyn Mills (Victoria Legal Aid), Ben Schokman (Human Rights Law Resource Centre) and John Tobin (Law School, University of Melbourne).

An Overview of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic)
26 February 2007 Postgraduate Roundtable with Sir Nigel RodleyThe Human Rights Forum and The Institute for International Law and the Humanities (iIlaH) presented this unique workshop with one of the world's leading human rights specialists. Sir Nigel Rodley is the Vice-Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee and a Professor of Law and Chair of the Human Rights Centre at Essex University. Sir Nigel was the inaugural UN Special Rapporteur on Torture from 1993-2001 and has been a Commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists since 2003. Postgraduate students from across the university gave informal presentations on a variety of human rights related research they are currently undertaking, which was then discussed in a roundtable setting. Friday February 16 2007 Conference: 'Human Rights Education'The Human Rights Forum hosted this major conference on the theme of Human Rights Education. Tuesday August 22 2006 Public Symposium: "Protecting Human Rights in an Age of Terrorism"
Waleed Aly (Islamic Council of Victoria), Rob Stary (Legal Representative for Jack Thomas), Associate Professor Fiona Haines (Criminology) and Professor Tony Coady (CAPPE) debated questions of human rights and addressing security concerns at the State Library of Victoria.
Friday August 18 2006 Roundtable: "Victorian Charter of Rights" Members of the Law, Politics and History departments of the University of Melbourne as well as representatives from Parliament, the EOC, PILCH, the Brotherhood of St Lawrence, VCOSS, Hanover, Department of Justice, the Uniting Church, the Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre, and other Universities came together to discuss the question; 'Will the Victorian Charter of Rights make a difference to the most vulnerable in the community?'
