Human Rights Specialists - Phd Students

Faith Hill 

Faith is completing a Phd in the Faculty of Education. Her research explores Human Rights Education by examining the concepts of alterity, relationality and responsibility through the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, and the implications of this for human rights education specifically, and education generally.

Lia Kent

Lia is completing a Phd in the Department of Criminology/Faculty of Law. Her thesis explores the tensions between local, national and international understandings and expectations of transitional justice in East Timor. Her current research interests include transitional justice and the role of the international community in post-conflict reconstruction.

Suzy Killmister 

Suzy's PhD title is: "Human rights and egalitarian claims: a social justice framework
for groups". The key questions she is considering are: Which group claims are
human rights? And how do we adjudicate between group rights and
individual rights? 

Peter Little

Peter Little is undertaking a Phd in the Faculty of Law on breaches of international human rights by multinational corporations pursuant to the Alien Tort Claims Act (US).

Nesam McMillan

PhD Candidate, School of Political Science, Criminology and Sociology
Nesam is in the final year of her PhD in Criminology. Her thesis focuses
on the international response to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Her current
research interests include genocide, particularly the Rwandan genocide;
international responsibility; and, postcolonial theory.

Maria V Rodrigues

Maria V Rodrigues is in the final stages of a Phd thesis concerning Psychology and Global Justice at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics.

Nicole Schlesinger 

Nicole is researching factors influencing judicial behaviour at the two ad hoc international criminal
tribunals (ICTs), the ICTY and the ICTR. Nicole’s research considers the impact of internal influences (judges' national system and professional backgrounds) and external influences (the historical and political contexts of the ICTs) on judicial behaviour.

Philippa Smales

Philippa is a Phd student in the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics.She has interest in many areas including human rights, law, philosophy, political philosophy, business and professional ethics. Her PhD thesis is focused on the human rights of sweatshop workers in developing countries.

Raelene West

Raelene is undertaking her PhD with the School of Population Health. Her study seeks to explore the experiences of adults living with spinal cord injury who are recipients of various funded disability support services within the State of Victoria. The study will seek to generate theory as to the meaning and understandings of the experience of receiving funded disability support services, and more specifically, explore understanding and knowledge of Human Rights in relation to these experiences.

 

Phoebe Wynn-Pope

Phoebe Wynn-Pope is researching a means to operationalise the newly emerging principle of a responsibility to protect against crimes against humanity and genocide.  Her research addresses international responses to atrocity crimes, humanitarian intervention, and human protection issues.
